" I don't want people who want to dance, I want people who HAVE to dance."-- George Balanchine |

Heather Ferri |
|
My goal while living in New York City was to view every Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Dance Company show to build a repertoire to work from. My mission as a choreographer is to take the material given to me and create an original piece. I am gifted at bringing out the best in those that are hired for a show and developing raw material into a finished product. I enjoy working with historically rich forms like traditional musicals, but I especially love being a part of original shows- they often require more fusion in the choreography and allow me to create something new and fresh that contributes to the growth of contemporary dance forms.
I believe a strong background in tap history is fundamental to creating original tap shows. I was honored to assist Henry LeTang at Broadway Dance Center and perform and train with masters Jimmy Slyde, Buster Brown, and Gregory Hines. My tap works are deeply rooted in what I learned from these masters, giving me steps but also teaching me how to be genuinely authentic, and a real artist where my work comes directly from my heart.
The desire to teach brought me back to Pittsburgh after ten years in New York City. I come back to my home town as a stronger and wiser woman. I have faced some difficult challenges and I have learned some tough "life lessons." I have conveyed my story in the hope that it will help you to understand something about me and how the very path that brought me to teaching is the path that will guide me as a teacher.
